Double Bass Size Chart
Choosing the right double bass size ensures comfortable posture, clean intonation and enjoyable playing. Double basses are sized fractionally, with 3/4 serving as the standard full size played by most adult orchestral and ensemble bassists, while 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 sizes suit younger and developing students.
When standing upright with the bass at playing height, the nut (where the fingerboard meets the pegbox) should sit approximately at eye to forehead level, and the player should be able to reach first position comfortably without over-extending the left shoulder. You can use the student's approximate height and age in the table below as a quick reference. If you are unsure between two sizes, an experienced bass teacher or our team can help you select the best fit.
