The Hands Behind the Bench

Meet the Dalseno String Studio Luthiers

Great teaching requires an instrument that responds effortlessly to every shift, vibrato, and bow stroke. Our in-house luthiers work side-by-side with our studio faculty on the Gold Coast.

Decades of Queensland & European Workshop Heritage: Our Gold Coast workshop brings together senior luthiers and craftspeople who previously trained and worked across Europe and Queensland's major string workshops — including experienced luthiers formerly with established Brisbane and Gold Coast violin houses such as Simply for Strings, Animato Strings, and Vivace Violins.

For advancing students preparing for AMEB Grade and Diploma examinations, youth orchestra players, and professional musicians across the Gold Coast and Brisbane, having Adrian Petrino, Benjamin Greig, and Ryan Lee under one roof ensures every instrument achieves its fullest tonal warmth and projection.

Specialist Services at Our Gold Coast Studio

We welcome both Dalseno String Studio students and external musicians from across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Northern NSW for individual bench consultations and repairs.

Master Setups & Acoustic Tonal Voicing

Even a fine European instrument will sound choked or uneven if its bridge, soundpost, or afterlength are out of balance. We offer interactive voicing sessions for advancing and professional players.

  • One-on-one soundpost adjustments for projection, warmth & focus
  • Elimination of wolf notes and sluggish string transitions
  • Tailpiece afterlength tuning & sympathetic overtone balancing
  • Bespoke string pairing advice (Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Gold, Obligato, Perpetual, Thomastik Dominant Pro, Rondo, Peter Infeld, Larsen Il Cannone)

Hand-Carved Bridges & Spruce Soundposts

The bridge and soundpost are the acoustic heart of a stringed instrument. Every bridge we fit is carved by hand to your instrument's exact top arching.

  • Custom-carved French & European aged maple bridges (Aubert, Aubert De Luxe & Despiau)
  • Precision heart, kidney & wing graduation for optimal frequency transmission
  • Split European spruce soundposts cut for seamless grain orientation & fit
  • Exact fingerboard-to-string clearance for clean shifting into high positions

Fine Bow Rehairing, Cambering & Restoration

Whether you play a fractional student bow or a fine pernambuco French or German bow, regular rehairing preserves both your tone and the structural integrity of the stick.

  • Artisanal bow rehairing with select unbleached stallion horsehair
  • Silver wire, whalebone-style & silk lapping with supple thumb leather grips
  • Protective bow tip plate replacement & mortise cleaning
  • Bow camber (curve) restoration, straightening & eyelet/screw fitting

Structural Restoration, Pegs & Varnish Care

Queensland's coastal climate places unique stress on tonewoods. We use traditional, reversible luthier methods to protect your instrument's long-term value.

  • Concentric peg shaving, pegbox reaming & spiral peg-hole bushing
  • Ebony fingerboard planing, scoop dressing & top nut carving
  • Open seam regluing with traditional hot hide glue
  • Top, back, soundpost & bass bar crack cleating and restoration
  • Rosin build-up removal, French polishing & spirit varnish retouching
For Studio Families, Exam Candidates & Visiting Players

Pre-AMEB Exam, Audition & Recital Setup Checks

Preparing for an AMEB Practical or Diploma exam, QYO/AYO youth orchestra audition, eisteddfod, or studio concert? Having your instrument and bow inspected two to three weeks before a performance ensures fresh strings have settled, pegs turn reliably during tuning, and open seams or buzzes never distract on stage.

Our workshop is located right alongside our teaching studios on the Gold Coast, allowing students and parents to drop instruments off before or after weekly lessons—or visit us directly from anywhere on the Gold Coast or Brisbane.

Frequently Asked Questions

Luthier Workshop & Restoration FAQs

Who performs the instrument repairs and setups at Dalseno String Studio?

All setups, tonal adjustments, bow rehairs, and restorations at Dalseno String Studio on the Gold Coast are performed in-house by senior luthier Adrian Petrino, luthier Benjamin Greig, and luthier & violin specialist Ryan Lee. Together, our workshop team brings decades of combined experience from European luthier training in Budapest under Cremonese-trained masters and senior roles across Queensland's major string workshops including Simply for Strings, Animato Strings, and Vivace Violins.

What is tonal voicing and how can a soundpost adjustment improve my instrument?

Even a fractional millimetre shift in soundpost position, tension, or bridge heart and wing thickness significantly changes how a violin, viola, cello, or double bass projects and responds. During a tonal voicing consultation at our Gold Coast studio, our luthiers work directly with you as you play—adjusting the soundpost, bridge geometry, and tailpiece afterlength to unlock warmth, evenness across all four strings, and immediate bow articulation.

Do you repair instruments for musicians who do not take lessons at Dalseno String Studio?

Yes. Alongside caring for our studio students' instruments, our Gold Coast luthier workshop welcomes external students, adult players, school string programs, tertiary conservatorium students, and professional orchestral musicians from across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Northern NSW.

What are your Gold Coast studio hours for dropping off an instrument or bow?

Our studio and workshop at Shop 10, 46–50 Spencer Road on the Gold Coast is open Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm and Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. You are welcome to call us on (07) 5596 4168 or email dalsenostringstudio@gmail.com to book a dedicated bench consultation with Adrian, Benjamin, or Ryan.

How do I know when my bow needs rehairing or my bridge needs attention?

If your bow hair feels slick even after applying rosin, has thinned unevenly on the playing edge, or stretches near the end of the screw travel, it is ready for a fresh rehair. Bridges should be checked every 6 to 12 months to ensure repeated tuning hasn't pulled the top of the bridge forward toward the fingerboard, which can warp the maple or cause the bridge to snap.
