Measuring a viola is easy, provided you have a tape measure or ruler in inches and a flat, firm surface to rest the instrument on.
Stand the viola on the side of the body (landscape mode) and face the strings away from you. Then measure the length of the back plate from one end to the other, making sure to put the measuring device in the centre of the backplate. Record the measurement in inches.
